Student houses are popular among burglars. A lot of valuable items like laptops, televisions and smartphones are often present there. Also, many people walk in and out, so it is less noticeable if a stranger walks in with them.
A burglary not only causes financial damage, but often has an emotional impact as well. With the following tips, you can already make a student house a lot safer.
- Never just open the general entrance door and don't let others walk in with you. If the doorbell rings and you are not expecting a parcel or meal delivery person, walk to the general entrance door to check whether the person is really at the door for that reason
- Always lock the front door, even when you are only away from home for a short time. Check that the general entrance door locks properly
- Close windows when you are not at home
- Lock your own room door
- Keep your valuables like laptops and smartphones out of sight
- If you are going away for a longer period of time take as many valuables with you as possible
- Don't hide keys under doormats and in flower pots. Even key safes are not safe places
- Call the police if you don't trust the situation
- Make sure you have contents insurance or find out if you are covered under your parents' policy
- Speak to your fellow residents if you see them not following the above tips. You are jointly responsible for safety in the building
